Spring Term Learning 2025

Welcome to Year 5!

Croeso i Dosbarth Pump!

Welcome to Year 5! This will be an incredibly busy year, with lots of fun and enriched learning.

This term our enquiry topic is 'Cynefin', defined by Curriculum for Wales as 'the place where we feel we belong, where the people and landscape around us are familiar, and the sights and sounds are reassuringly recognisable.’. Therefore; Year 5 have been on an exciting journey exploring the cultures, tradition and landscapes of India and Wales. Our learning has taken us across continents as we discovered fascinating similarities and differences between these two rich countries.

What We've Been Learning:

  • Geography & Culture: We compared the landscapes of India and Wales, exploring mountains, rivers, and the unique features of each country. We also learned about major festivals such as Diwali and St. Davids Daycreating Venn diagrams to highlight their similarities and differences.

  • Art & Design: The children designed beautiful Rangoli patterns and crafted their own Diyas to celebrate the light and warmth of Indian traditions. We also explored the use of patterns and symbols in both cultures.

  • Science & Nature: As part of our science work, we planted marigold seeds, a flower that holds cultural significance in both India and Wales. The children tracked the growth of their marigolds and created line graphs to show their progress over time.

  • Food & Festivals: One of the highlights of our term was exploring traditional foods from India and Wales. Welsh cakes and chapatis, tasted and compared them, and even wrote food reviews to describe our experiences.

  • The Great Bake-Off Fusion Challenge: Taking inspiration from both cultures, the children designed their own fusion dishes that combined flavour and traditions from India and Wales. They also created food packaging labels to showcase their creations.

  • Poetry & Creative Writing: To reflect on their learning, the children wrote free verse poems capturing the beauty and diversity of both cultures. They explored imagery, emotions, and sensory language to bring their poems to life.

PE Days: Tuesday & Friday

Please note that PE will take place on Tuesdays and Fridays this term. Children should come to school in their PE kits on these days/ Long hair will need to be tied back and all jewellery removed. We keep as safe as we can during physical activity - 'Safety! Safety! Safety!' is our little motto. Our sessions will focus on developing teamwork, fitness, and coordination through a variety of activities.

As you know PE; which could be gymnastics, dance or games; is an important part of your healthy development. It is as just an important lesson as Maths and Literacy and it is one of your rights. As you know a healthy body and mind work together and so we must all take part in PE activities (adults too) to stay focused, unless there is a good reason not to e.g. injury.

Exciting Showcase Event!

To celebrate all that we've learned, we will be hosting a Showcase Event where the children will present their work, share their poems and perform Calon Lân and a traditional Indian dance. We look forward to sharing this experience with you soon!

I will be sending out spellings every week to practice at home and what we are learning in maths that week. But we also have our Active Learn log-ins for additional maths activities, TT Rockstar log ins for multiplication games practice and Oxford Owl for online reading focus. Hwb is also a fabulous resource for Welsh activities, E-safety tasks and reminding us about the New Curriculum. If you've forgotten your password, come and ask me.

Thanks for your continued support. If you have any questions or would like to know more about our learning journey, please feel free to get in touch.
